A long time HAM Member has passed away:

Ralph Grossnickle Ecker, 76, of Boyds, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville.

Born March 2, 1933, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Owen E. and Eva (Grossnickle) Ecker.

Mr. Ecker graduated from Frederick High School, class of 1951. He attended Bowman Technical Institute in Lancaster, Pa., and Washington Bible College and was a veteran of the United States Army.

He was owner and operator of Ecker's Clock and Watch Shop of Bethesda until July 2000.

Mr. Ecker was an active member of Berea Bible Church of Clarksburg and held many positions over the years and was pastor of a small country church in Frederick County for many years. He was a founding member of the Horological Association of Maryland, serving as president, vice president and director, was a member of the American Watch Makers -- Clock Makers Institution and a member of the British Horological Association.

His passions included being an amateur radio operator (HAM), model airplanes and he was a private licensed pilot.

He was the beloved husband of Carolyn Kline Ecker for 37 years. They were married Oct. 16, 1971.

He is also survived by sisters, Patsy Fogle and husband, Charles, of Frederick, and Helen Craig and husband, Stanley, of Hagerstown; beloved mother-in-law, Ruth N. From the Pres.

Thanks to Tom Koluch for his August 10 Lecture on pivots and bushings and frictional loses. He did this lecture years ago when the club was meeting at the Days Inn Motel. The way the guys talked about it years afterward made me look forward to attending it myself. Good Job Tom, look forward to your next one.

Steve Conover was the Guest speaker at NAWCC Chapter 141 last Wednesday. He explained the function and setup of the Fusee found in many English and French clocks. It was a treat to finally meet him. His books helped me get started in clock repair.

Not sure what Bob has planned for this meetings activity, we'll wait and see. If you have an idea for a activity let Bob know.

We have been invited by Jim Micheals to tour the NAWCC Classrooms and Workshops. This will be a weekend trip and we only need to decide on a date and confirm it with Jim.

Secretary Report:

HAM 10 August 2009 Meeting Minutes

In attendance were: Al Takatsch , Bob Rothen, Earl Knight, Dan Spath, George Tresansky, John Ryea, Wilbur Robinson, Tom Koluch, Leroy Roberts, Larry Eichelberger, David Hannemann, Gerald  Kincaid, John Kuntz, Brett Louis, John Bishop and Andy Abendschoen.  Al introduced a guest, Steve Thomas, to the group.

Al started the meeting by asking everyone to introduce themselves and talk about their current project(s).

Old Business:  A fruit basket was given to Ralph Ecker.  Dan traded in his winnings from the July 13 50/50 for a dial indicator, one of the gifts received from The Little Machine Shop.

Treasurer’s Report:  No report.

Secretary’s Report:  The minutes for the previous meeting, posted on the HAM Home Page, were accepted as published.

New Business:

·                    Dan Spath attended the AWCI meeting in Rode Island and provided a brief overview.  He estimated about 400 members out of a current enrollment of 2486 were present.  He proposed an amendment that AWCI remove itself from the certification process.  His proposal did not receive support.  Dan will provide a CD containing the AWCI minutes and reports as soon as it is published.

·                    Al led a discussion on the longevity of oil.  What is its shelf life?  The consensus was that oil bottled can be kept indefinitely as long as it does what it is supposed to do.  Once placed in a dip cup, oil should be kept no longer than two weeks.

·                    The 50/50 was won by Willbur.  He selected a digital micrometer from The Little Machine Shop gift basket.

Presentation:

Tom Koluch presented an informative presentation on pivot design and how it affects friction.  He diagramed several shapes for pivot ends and described their interaction with end stones and how they differ in the amount of friction each creates.

Respectfully submitted,

LeRoy Roberts, Secretary
